Succulents and More at Snug Harbor Nursery

Recently some friends and I spent the day exploring the Kennebunkport area - mostly because one had heard such good things about Snug Harbor Nursery and wanted to check it out for herself.  I’ve visited this spot quite a few times in the past and it never disappoints.  This year, like most good nurseries, they have gathered an excellent selection of succulents.  Loved the look of planting them in a  shell pot - and am planning to make a smaller arrangement in a real shell that’s been sitting in my basement.

Part of the fun of planting these undemanding plants is playing with shapes and colors from the most brilliant lime green to subtle gray and tinges of reds and yellows.

And it had never occured to me that they are the perfect plants for a hanging basket because they need so little water
.

While Snug Harbor is a great place to find plants for your garden, it’s also a place to find inspiration for how and where to plant them.

Consider how a line of handsome pots planted with your favorite tree could define a special spot or provide privacy.  Or how an old out-building becomes an attractive focal point with

carefully planned planting:  rigorously trimmed topiary hedges along one side are  offset with free-growing vines on the other.
The glorious lime-green hosta was a present to the owner from the legendary Alan Haskell.  Even the doves have a special place to call home.
